Disclaimer: This post is to assist fellow travelers who wish to hike to the summit of Santa Cruz on the outskirts of Guanajuato. If you are not of this category this post will provide little entertainment.
Every morning spent in Guanajuato began as we watched the sun crest over Santa Cruz. Being the highest peak within the town’s vicinity we could only imagine the view one must have looking down on the valley floor. But since our grasp of the native language is extremely limited we kept putting the task off not knowing whether or not we should look for a trailhead. We eventually learned that once a year in the fall, the entire town migrates up the hill as part of a celebration. Therefore, a trail had to exist. We began by simply walking up hill, and with a little help from a woman whose property we trespassed on we found the trail. We took some pictures and posted them below, hopefully helping anyone else who wishes to get a bit of exercise while visiting Guanajuato. The hike only took a total of 3 hours, roundtrip, with ½ hour spent on the summit. It’s absolutely worth it.
In addition to the pictures I have added a GPX file which you can either view on google maps or bring with you on a handheld GPS device.
